Solar-powered “light libraries” are helping households rent lights and batteries, creating safer and healthier living conditions.

EmpowerEarth Alliance is transforming energy access in remote communities of Nepal through its innovative “Light Libraries” initiative. These libraries offer households the ability to rent solar-powered lights and rechargeable batteries at affordable rates, replacing hazardous and expensive kerosene lamps. Pema Tamang, a local resident, shared:

"With the light library, our evenings are no longer dictated by darkness. My children can now study at night safely and without the toxic fumes of kerosene. "

The program has already made a significant impact, reaching over 1,500 households in its first phase. Beyond providing light, these solar-powered systems create healthier and safer living environments, particularly for women and children. Maha Gurung, a local entrepreneur, noted:

"This initiative has helped me extend my working hours into the evening. My small tailoring business has grown, and my income has doubled within months."

EmpowerEarth's light libraries not only enhance daily life but also contribute to environmental sustainability. By reducing reliance on kerosene, the initiative lowers carbon emissions and improves air quality in homes. Rajesh Shrestha, an EmpowerEarth coordinator for the region, said:

"This project is a perfect example of how renewable energy can change lives and protect the planet at the same time."

With the success of the pilot phase, EmpowerEarth Alliance plans to expand light libraries to more remote areas across Nepal, ensuring that even the most underserved communities have access to safe, sustainable energy solutions. This initiative showcases the power of renewable energy to drive social, economic, and environmental progress.
